Henrietta Szold with first graduating class of the Hadassah Training School for Nurses, Jerusalem, 1921.

Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, was founded in 1912 by Henrietta Szold. Over the past century, the organization has engaged hundreds of thousands of American Jewish women in the Zionist project. Two nurses sent to Jerusalem in 1913 grew into a network of hospitals, clinics, health stations, public health initiatives and school-based programs that represent key segments of Israel’s health system. In addition to health care, Hadassah has also supported other projects in Palestine and later Israel, primarily focused on education and children.

Photographs in the Hadassah Archives date from the arrival of American nurses in Palestine in 1913 through the projects and events of the 2010s. The images in this record group reflect and compliment the documents in the Hadassah Records, portraying Hadassah’s political, social and philanthropic endeavors in the United States and the programs it administered in Palestine and Israel. They illustrate specific Hadassah programs, such as nutrition and infant care campaigns carried out in Palestine, and serve as evidence to support the organization's principles documented in other record groups by showing, for example, that early medical work in Palestine served both the Arab and the Jewish populations.

The collection's portrayal of women at work—in both typical and less typical working situations for women of the times—exhibits a dichotomy between the types of work Hadassah employees and volunteers performed in the United States and the tasks performed in Palestine. Images of American chapter members participating in philanthropic fundraising activities (luncheons, bond drives, etc.) contrast with images of the paid nursing and educational staff who played an instrumental role in Hadassah's efforts to establish health care and education in Palestine, frequently in the midst of wars.

Adapting aspects of women’s public activities, the chapters focused on women’s health issues, self-education, public speaking and issues related to Zionism. At sewing circles’ meetings, Zionist literature was read aloud in English and Yiddish. Hadassah’s approach to Zionism was distinctly non-ideological and was understood as a movement for renewing Jewish practical idealism. The chapters actively recruited non-Zionists and rejected Zionist policy of creating institutions only for Jews in Palestine.

By the time the United States entered World War I, Hadassah had thirty-four chapters and 2,100 members. Despite an ideological split in the organization’s leadership, between the pacifists and the impassioned supporters of the Allies, the chapters united in their mission to raise thousands of dollars to fund the American Zionist Medical Unit (AZMU), consisting of forty-five physicians, dentists and nurses as well as a large amount of supplies.

Early photographs, such as those showing Henrietta Szold in the desert in bloomers, or seated amongst male politicians in the 1920s, make clear her unusual role in history. The same is true of the many other images showing Hadassah leaders speaking to all-male audiences. Photographs of Hadassah members in America show decade-by-decade details of the activities in which American members participated and reflect changes in societal roles and activities considered appropriate for American women. In 1960, chapter members in Los Angeles held a glamorous fashion show featuring their hand-sewn satin dresses; by 1972, Los Angeles members in pantsuits were loading food into trucks for shipment to Nicaragua.

The extensive selection of photographs taken at youth camps sponsored by Hadassah over the decades offer an insight into the evolution of the Jewish American youth culture through most of the twentieth century.

Acquisition Information

The Hadassah Archives, of which the Photographs record group (I-578/RG 18) is a part of, are on long-term deposit at the American Jewish Historical Society.

Due to imperfect accession records, the origins of the photographs and the process by which they arrived at the Hadassah Archives are in many cases unknown. A large number of images arrived from Hadassah departments, mainly Publicity, Public Affairs, Visual Aids and Hadassah Magazine. Thousands of other images originated from Hadassah photographer and member Hazel Greenwald (later, Hazel Berkowitz), whose tenure and documentary contributions spanned four decades (1933-1971). Over the decades, Hadassah hired other professional photographers in Israel and America, whose work appears throughout the collection as well. Many photographs were taken by and obtained from Israeli, Jewish or Zionist organizations and press agencies. Chapter members have donated personal photographs, now located in the Chapters and Youth Activities series. Lastly, the collection contains a number of well-preserved images from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, whose origins are unknown.

Processing Information

The record group was partially processed during the 1990s and 2000s by Susan Woodland and other archivists, as part of the Audiovisual Materials record group (RG 18). Word Document box lists were created for the processed materials. In 2016, video and audio materials were separated to form the new RG 25—Audio and Moving Images Materials.

From the mid-2000s to 2016 additional photographs were donated by members, and individual chapters and regions of Hadassah.

In December 1999, Hadassah and the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS) entered into an agreement placing the Hadassah Archives on deposit at AJHS for its safekeeping and maintenance. In November 2000, the Hadassah Archives were moved to AJHS under the management of the Director of the Hadassah Archives, Susan Woodland. In 2014, under a new agreement between Hadassah and AJHS, the Hadassah Archives were placed on long-term deposit at AJHS.

The previously unprocessed materials were housed in acid-free folders and boxes. All boxes and folders were numbered to create uniform numbering across the entire record group. Most of the scrapbooks and albums were unbound and rehoused in acid-free folders and envelopes.

Series I: Youth Aliyah, 1920s-2003, (bulk 1940s-1970s)

The series is in English.
Boxes 1-24, 259-261, 263.
Arrangement:

This series is arranged into three subseries: Subseries 1: Events, Subseries 2: Subjects, Subseries 3: Villages, Institutions, and Day Centers. Arrangement within the subseries is either alphabetical or chronological.

Scope and Content:

Series I: Youth Aliyah photographs is the visual representation of RG 1—Youth Aliyah in the Hadassah Archives. The Youth Aliyah Records in the Hadassah Archives document Hadassah's work with multiple international organizations to rescue Jewish children from continental Europe to Palestine from 1933-1945. The records also document Hadassah's involvement with Youth Aliyah since 1946 in providing residential, educational, vocational, rehabilitative, and therapeutic care for displaced and at-risk youth from around the world.

The Youth Aliyah photographs, dating from the 1920s to the 2000s, document the Youth Aliyah movement from its beginning in Europe in the 1930s, through major periods of immigration to Israel. These include the late 1940s and 1950s when Jewish children and families immigrated to Israel to escape persecution in their home countries in the Middle East and the immigration of Ethiopian and Soviet Jewry in the 1980s and 1990s. The photographs primarily focus on the Youth Aliyah children and teens and the Youth Aliyah facilities where they lived or went to school. There are many photos showing the children and teens studying, learning, working, and participating in celebrations and events, as well as informal individual and group portraits. There also many exterior and interior views of Youth Aliyah facilities. Some of the exterior views also capture surrounding landscape views of Palestine/Israel.

Key Hadassah and Jewish Agency for Palestine/Israel figures who were involved in the Youth Aliyah movement and the building of institutions and programs that support it are also documented in the photographs. Moshe Kol, who headed the Youth Aliyah Department of the Jewish Agency for nineteen years, is in many of the photos, particularly in the Events subseries. Hadassah leaders represented in the photographs (many of whom served either as Chairman of the Youth Aliyah Committee, National President, or both) include (but are not limited to) Miriam Freund Rosenthal, Bertha Schoolman, Frieda Lewis, Marian Greenberg, Lola Kramarsky, Rebecca Shulman, Julia Dushkin, Charlotte Jacobson, Ruth Popkin, Faye Schenk, Rose Matzkin, and Bernice Tannenbaum. There are also photos of public figures who supported Hadassah’s Youth Aliyah programs and activities such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Otto Frank and Elfriede Geiringer, Vera Weizmann, and Alix de Rothschild, as well and numerous statesmen from Israel, the United States, and other countries. A small number of photographs show some of the crucial early figures in the Youth Aliyah movement including Recha Freier, Henrietta Szold, Hans Beyth, and Gisela (Warburg) Wyzanski.

Photographers are often noted on the versos of the photographs. Some of the photographers include: Hazel Greenwald, who served as chairman of the Hadassah Film Department for 18 years); Erich Comeriner (1907-1978), who was born in Vienna, began photography in 1924, and whose works can be found at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; K. Meyerowitz; Werner Braun; Herbert Sonnenfeld; W. Zadek; Hella Fernback; Nachum Gidal; Helga Caro; Schmidt; M. Kaufman; Z. Kluger of the Orient Press Photo Company, Tel Aviv; R. Weissenstein; David Harris; Shlomy Ben-Ami; Isaac Berez, Tel Aviv; Edgar Asher; C. Zumwalt, New York; Jewish Agency Photo Service; Psychophoto, Haifa; Keren Hayesod; and Israel Press and Photo Agency, Tel Aviv.

Though the majority of this series consists of black-and-white photographs, there are also color photographs, photograph albums, scrapbooks (with photographs), slides, and negatives.

Subseries 2: Subjects, circa 1920s-2002

The subseries is in English.
Boxes 4-6, 11-22, 24, 259.
Arrangement:

Alphabetical.

Scope and Content:

Subseries 2 primarily focuses on Youth Aliyah children and teens, their lives at Youth Aliyah facilities, and the activities they participated in. There are many individual and group portraits. Also represented are people who were actively involved in the Youth Aliyah movement in Palestine/Israel, Europe, the United States, and other places, such as Hadassah National Board members, Recha Freier, Moshe Kol, and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Photographs in this subseries also document key Youth Aliyah immigration periods including the 1930s to 1940s when Jewish children were being rescued from Europe before, during, and immediately after World War II; the late 1940s and 1950s when Jewish children and families were escaping persecution from their home countries in the Middle East; and the mass immigration of Ethiopian and Soviet Jewry in the 1980s and 1990s.

Included are black-and-white photographs, color photographs, photograph albums, slides, and negatives.

Subseries 3: Villages, Institutions, and Day Centers, circa 1920s-2003

The subseries is in English.
Boxes 6-12, 14-15, 17-20, 22-24, 260.
Arrangement:

Alphabetical.

Scope and Content:

Subseries 3 documents Youth Aliyah facilities including youth villages, day centers, and vocational and guidance centers. Many of the photographs in this subseries show children and teens participating in various activities at the Youth Aliyah facilities. At Youth Aliyah villages, children and teens spent half the day studying and half the day working and learning trades and vocational skills in workshops. Activities include agriculture and farming, arts and crafts, music (singing and playing instruments), sewing, carpentry and wood working, mechanics, electronics, hairdressing, cooking, and boat building. The photographs also show exterior and interior views of the Youth Aliyah facilities and often capture the surrounding landscape.

Other than the Youth Aliyah children and teens, some of key figures in Youth Aliyah are represented in the photographs including Moshe Kol, who headed the Youth Aliyah Department of the Jewish Agency for Israel for nineteen years, and Hadassah National Presidents and Hadassah Youth Aliyah Committee members such as Bertha Schoolman, who served for many years as the National Chairman.

Included are black-and-white photographs, color photographs, scrapbooks (with photographs), photograph albums, slides, and negatives.

Series II: Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO), 1913-2010, (bulk 1920-1990)

The series is in English.
Boxes 24-77, 259, 264 MAP 1I.
Arrangement:

This series in arranged into six subseries: Subseries 1: Buildings, facilities, and sites, circa 1918-2005; Subseries 2: Events, 1918-2010; Subseries 3: People, 1913-2008; Subseries 4: Programs and subjects, circa 1913-1999; Subseries 5: Stories, circa 1969-1995; and Subseries 6: Visitors, 1926-2007. Arrangement within the subseries is either alphabetical or chronological.

Scope and Content:

Series II: Hadassah Medical Organization photographs comprise the visual representation of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America’s century of work establishing and supporting health care facilities and services in Palestine and Israel. The Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) photographs also correspond to and support the Hadassah Medical Organization Records that comprise Record Group 2 of the Hadassah Archives. The HMO Records document Hadassah's work in providing health care resources in Palestine and Israel since 1918. The activities documented revolve around the development of the Hadassah Hospital; health centers; dental centers; occupational and rehabilitative services; medical, nursing, dental, and pharmacy schools; as well as numerous educative and preventive projects, especially those aimed at infant care. The documents also reflect the history of the Yishuv (Jewish settlement in Palestine) and the establishment of the State of Israel. For more in-depth historical context of the HMO photographs, researchers should consult the finding aid for RG 2—Hadassah Medical Organization Records.

The Hadassah Medical Organization photographs, dating from circa 1913 to 2010, document the construction of HMO health care facilities in Palestine and Israel; show events celebrating or commemorating significant moments in HMO history; portray key figures in HMO history including Hadassah National Board members and HMO administrators; show visitors (including many notable figures) at HMO facilities; and depict countless HMO medical staff (nurses, doctors, researchers), non-medical staff, and patients. Included in this series are photographs documenting Hadassah’s earliest efforts to establish public health services in Palestine— sending two American nurses (Rachel "Rae" Landy and Rose Kaplan) to Palestine in 1913 and establishing and sending the American Zionist Medical Unit (AZMU) to Palestine in 1918. The early photographs include portraits of Landy and Kaplan, portraits of the AZMU both in New York City and in Palestine, as well as scenes of early clinics and health welfare stations established by Hadassah and other organizations in Palestine. As nursing and nurses were crucial to the work of the HMO and its predecessor, the American Zionist Medical Unit, HMO nurses and the nursing school are frequently depicted in the photographs. Beyond HMO and medical-related subjects, the photographs also visually record topics related to creation and administration of the state of Israel such as Jewish-Arab relations; violence, war, and peace; immigration; and architecture. Aerial and exterior views of HMO facilities also incidentally document both cityscape and landscape views of Israel.

Key Hadassah and Hadassah Medical Organization figures are represented in the HMO photographs. Hadassah National Presidents, Hadassah National Board members, and members who served on HMO-related committees are found in abundance in this series. Hadassah leaders are shown attending significant events in HMO history such as building dedication ceremonies, memorial events, and events recognizing major medical breakthroughs by HMO doctors. They are also shown touring HMO facilities or accompanying visitors to HMO facilities. Though not comprehensive, the list of Hadassah leaders represented in the HMO photographs include Henrietta Szold, Rose Halprin, Julia Dushkin, Rebecca Shulman, Miriam Freund Rosenthal, Lola Kramarsky, Charlotte Jacobson, Faye Schenk, Rose Matzkin, Bernice Tannenbaum, Frieda Lewis, Ruth Popkin, Carmela Kalmanson, and Deborah Kaplan.

Hadassah Medical Organization directors are also well documented in this series. Henrietta Szold, the founder of Hadassah, served as Acting Director of the HMO twice, once in 1920 and again from 1922 to 1923. Szold can be found in some of the earliest photographs in this series (starting in the 1910s) until the 1940s (she died in 1945). Haim Yassky, who served as Director of Hadassah Medical Organization from 1928 until his death in 1948 (Yassky died during the HMO convoy attack on April 13, 1948), is well documented in the photos, primarily while serving as director, but also while he worked as an ophthalmologist for the HMO. The 1948 HMO convoy attack and subsequent memorials to it are also represented in this series. Eli Davis, also an ophthalmologist, who became Director of the HMO after Yassky’s death (from 1948 to 1951), is also found in the photographs. There are images of him both as HMO director and as an HMO doctor. Kalman J. Mann, the first Director General of Hadassah Medical Organization (the title of Director was changed to Director General during his service), is portrayed in a many photographs in this series, primarily during the years of his directorship from 1951 to 1981. Samuel (Shmuel) Penchas, HMO Director General from 1981 to 1999, is the last of the HMO directors that is amply represented in the photographs.

Photographers are often noted on the versos of the photographs. Some of the photographers include: Hazel Greenwald (served as chairman of the Hadassah Film Department for 18 years); K. Meyerowitz; Werner Braun; Photo Studio M. Huttmann; Louis Reens; Nachum Gidal; G.D. Hackett, New York; Fred Csasznik, Jerusalem; David Rubinger; R.M. Kneller, Jerusalem; Photo-Emka, Ltd., Jerusalem; Mike Goldberg, Jerusalem; Amir Gavriely, Jerusalem; Israel Sun, Ltd.; Avi Hayon; Photo Prisma, Jerusalem; International News Photo, New York; Press Association, Inc.; Haim Yassky (HMO Director, 1928-1948); Alexander Studio, Tel-Aviv; Alfred Bernheim, Jerusalem; Gail Rubin, Tel-Aviv; A. Malawsky, Jerusalem; Herbert Sonnenfeld, New York; E. Michael Bluestone (HMO Director, 1926-1928); Union Photo Co., New York; Z. Kluger, The Orient Press Photo Co.; and A. Malawsky, Jerusalem.

Though the majority of this series consists of black-and-white photographs, there are also color photographs, photograph albums, scrapbooks with photographs, slides, and negatives.

Subseries 1: Buildings, facilities, and sites, circa 1918-2005

The subseries is in English.
Boxes 24-29, 41-42, 45-46, 49, 52-53, 59-67, 69-71, 73-76, 259, 264, MAP 1I.
Arrangement:

Alphabetical.

Scope and Content:

This subseries visually chronicles nearly 100 years of medical and health care facilities in Palestine and Israel that were established and supported by the Hadassah Medical Organization. Facilities include health care clinics; infant welfare stations; Rothschild Hadassah University Hospital, Hadassah’s first hospital in Palestine and the Medical Center at Mount Scopus in Jerusalem; the Medical Center at Ein Kerem in Jerusalem; the medical school jointly founded by the HMO and Hebrew University, the nursing school, the dental school, and the school of pharmacy.

Significant events in HMO history are documented in this subseries such as establishment of the first HMO hospital in Palestine located in the former Rothschild Hospital; the construction and opening of a new hospital and medical center at Mount Scopus in 1939 (Erich Mendelsohn, pioneer in Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architecture, was the architect); the loss and abandonment of the Medical Center at Mount Scopus in 1948 during the Israel-Arab War of 1948-1949; the HMO’s use of five temporary hospitals after the loss of the Mount Scopus medical center; the construction and opening of a second medical center at Ein Kerem in 1961 (Joseph Neufeld, known for his International Style buildings, was the architect); and the reclaiming and reconstruction of the medical center at Mount Scopus in 1967 after the Israel-Arab War of 1967 (it had fallen into severe disrepair).

Construction events for a new Rothschild Hadassah University Hospital, part of the new medical center to be located at Mount Scopus, began with the cornerstone ceremony held on October 16, 1934. Attendees included Henrietta Szold, Haim Yassky, Judah L. Magnes, Mendel Menahem Ussishkin (head of the Jewish National Fund), and Nahum Sokolow (president of World Zionist Organization). The groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 21, 1936. Attendees included Henrietta Szold, Haim Yassky, Judah L. Magnes, David Ben-Gurion, Erich Mendelsohn, Julia Dushkin, and Israel J. Kligler. The opening ceremony for the new hospital was held on May 9, 1939. Subseries 1 includes construction and building site photographs, as well as photographs of architectural models, renderings, and building plans. Subseries 2: Events contains photographs showing the cornerstone, groundbreaking, and opening ceremonies. For the architectural records, see RG 21—Architectural Materials (in the Hadassah Archives). For photographs and architectural records of other HMO buildings, such as the medical center at Ein Kerem, it is advised that the researcher search in a similar way, looking in Subseries 1 for construction photographs, Subseries 2 for photographs of events related to the construction and opening of HMO buildings, and in RG 2—Hadassah Architectural Records for architectural records of specific buildings. Finally, for historical context regarding HMO facilities, the researcher should also search in RG 2—Hadassah Medical Organization Records.

The subseries includes aerial, exterior, and interior views of various health care facilities. The majority of the photographs are black-and-white, but there are also color photographs, slides, and negatives.

Subseries 2: Events, 1918-2010

The subseries is in English.
Boxes 24, 29-36, 43, 48-49, 55, 59, 61-62, 64-65, 71-76, 259.
Arrangement:

Chronological.

Scope and Content:

This subseries depicts key events in HMO history, primarily ceremonies celebrating the construction and opening of new or reconstructed heath care facilities in Palestine and Israel. Included are scenes of groundbreaking, cornerstone, dedication, and opening ceremonies for new HMO buildings and the medical centers at Mount Scopus and Ein Kerem. The photographs of events also document a variety of subjects such as the 1929 riots in Palestine (including in Hebron, Jerusalem, Haifa, and Tel Aviv); nursing school and medical school graduation; medical school departments; HMO-related conferences, seminars, and lectures; tours of HMO facilities; war and emergency preparations; moving day into medical center at Ein Kerem from the various temporary hospitals; exhibitions in Paris and New York (at the Museum of Modern Art) of the Marc Chagall stained glass windows; and the installation and dedication of the Chagall windows in the synagogue at the medical center at Ein Kerem.

Please note that some of the photographs documenting people injured or killed in riots and war in this subseries can be graphic and could be disturbing to some viewers.

The majority of the photographs are black-and-white, but there are also color photographs, slides, and negatives.
