Scope and Content Note

Series I contains the materials related to the Executive Directors of Hadassah.

The role of the executive directors of Hadassah was to implement strategic plans and projects for the organization, in the United States and in Israel, raise funds, oversee day-to-day operation, manage staff and volunteers, organize conventions and conferences, and coordinate Hadassah’s regional chapters.

Series II contains the materials related to the national presidents of Hadassah.

National presidents were top leaders of Hadassah who shaped the organization's mission, and developed the policies, practices and procedures that governed the organization's operations. The series includes papers of Henrietta Szold, a prominent Zionist leader and founder of Hadassah, who served two terms as the organization's national president.

Abstract

This record group includes documents created and maintained by the Office of the President, the Office of the Executive Director and the Chair of the Division Coordinators/Directors Committee. Prominent is the Henrietta Szold series, containing correspondence by and to Szold as well as printed materials written by and about her. The files in this record group were created by a national president or executive director, or for their use, or maintained in their office during their years in office. Included are correspondence, minutes, memos, publications, reports and subject files on topics with which these individuals were involved.

Acquisition Information

The Hadassah Archives, of which the Executive Functions Records (RG 13) are part of, are on long-term deposit at the American Jewish Historical Society.

Microfilm

The Hadassah Archives include RG 19—Microforms. The record group includes the microfilmed papers of two national presidents of Hadassah—Alice L. Seligsberg and Rose G. Jacobs. The materials on microfilm are copies of the original documents found in the Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem. In her later years, Rose Jacobs willed her papers to the State of Israel. The Jacobs and Seligsberg collections are grouped together because at the time of her death in 1940 Alice Seligsberg left her papers to Rose Jacobs—her closest friend and pupil. Alice Seligsberg and Rose Jacobs were early presidents of Hadassah and their papers are of major significance to the history of Hadassah and Zionism. The Department of Archives and Research at Hadassah approached the executor of the Jacobs estate with a request for permission to film these papers in order to retain one copy in the United States for scholarly use. Permission was granted with the agreement of the Jewish Agency for Israel—who handled the transfer of the collection to Israel—to microfilm papers located at the Zionist Archives in New York City, in December 1982. Since the papers were willed to the Zionist Archives in Jerusalem to be arranged and classified by that institution under the direction of Dr. Michael Heymann, and because the time alloted to Hadassah to film the documents was short, the papers were microfilmed in the state of the original arrangement given them by Mrs. Jacobs herself.

The American Jewish Historical Society holds the Henrietta Szold letters (P-216) and Solis-Cohen Family Papers (P-642) which contain correspondence with Henrietta Szold.

Separated Material

Materials in certain formats were removed from RG 13 and placed into the following record groups: RG 17—Printed Materials and Publications; RG 18—Photographs; RG 25—Audio and Moving Images Materials; RG 21—Architectural Materials; and RG 22—Artifacts and Memorabilia.

Processing Information

Various parts of the Executive Functions Records in the Hadassah Archives were initially processed, or partially processed separately, starting in the 1980s by Dr. Lawrence Geller and Ira Daly who worked for Hadassah as Archivist and Assistant Archivist, respectively. Printed guides were created for the Henrietta Szold subseries and for the microfilmed portions of the Alice Seligsberg and Rose Jacobs papers.

In December 1999, Hadassah and the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS) entered into an agreement placing the Hadassah Archives on deposit at AJHS for its safekeeping and maintenance. In November 2000, the Hadassah Archives were moved to AJHS under the management of the Director of the Hadassah Archives, Susan Woodland. During the decade of the 2000s Woodland—with intermittent help from the Assistant Archivists Angie Park and Jeanne Swadosh, and several volunteers, created additional updated folder lists for the majority of the materials in the record group. In 2014, under a new agreement between Hadassah and AJHS, the Hadassah Archives were placed on long-term deposit at AJHS.

In 2015, various aspects of the Executive Functions Records (RG 13) were intellectually rearranged into a single finding aid. Approximately 8 linear feet of the unprocessed accretions were incorporated into the new arrangement. Previously existing box lists were reused and incorporated into the 2015 finding aid as much as possible. Series and subseries description were added and collection-level notes pertaining to acquisition, processing, access and use, and related material were added as well. Some folder titles were revised.

The Henrietta Szold subseries that was originally arranged into 13 parts, including a sizeable subgroup titled "Miscellaneous," was intellectually rearranged into 4 subsubseries. The materials from the miscellaneous boxes were intellectually incorporated into the appropriate subsubseries.

Boxes and folders were renumbered to create uniform numbering across the entire record group.
