Gumprecht Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains identification documents for the Gumprecht family that they used as they left Germany after the Nazis took power. These include birth certificates, affidavits of support, letters of support from friends for immigration purposes as well as letters from Edith Gumprecht's parents Wilhelm and Hedwig Jotkowitz in Hamburg. Wilhelm and Hedwig also wrote to their daughter Ruth in London and those letters are present as well. The letters are translated into English. Also included are very detailed travel reports by Werner Gumprecht describing their trip from Germany to Seville, the first leg of their journey. Finally, the collection contains material about the Spanish ship Navemar, which the Gumprecht family used to make the trip from Seville to Brooklyn New York. This includes photographs, a song sheet and newspaper articles about the ship.

Biographical Note
Werner G. Gumprecht was born on December 23, 1905 in Hamburg, the son of Helmuth and Anna Sophie Gumprecht. Werner was married to Edith (née Jotkowitz) and the couple had 3 daughters: Marion, Karin and Renate, who were all born in Hamburg. They were 9, 5 and 3 respectively when the family left Germany on July 22, 1941. The ship docked in Brooklyn but the family settled in Cleveland and was naturalized in 1947. Werner, who had been a chauffeur in Germany, became a cable layer in America. He died in Cleveland in 1980.
