Walter and Johanna Rischowsky Collection
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of 2 binders with documents collected by Walter Rischowsky. The first binder ("Behördliche Anordnungen") is a collection of official regulations between 1941 and 1942, which restricted the life of German Jews. This binder consists primarily of copies of announcements of new regulations distributed by the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland to subordinated agencies and Jewish communities, as well as copies of memos, newspaper clippings, and the like. This binder is sorted by topics. The second binder is a chronological collection of copies of memos of the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland about meetings with members of the Zentralstelle für Jüdische Auswanderung (Central Office for Jewish Emigration) (1940-1941). The Zentralstelle für Jüdische Auswanderung was set up in Germany on January 24, 1939 on the models of similar offices in Vienna and Prague. The new office was headed by Heinrich Mueller, chief of section II of the Gestapo. In December 1939 Adolf Eichmann was transferred to Berlin. The office was staffed by the Sicherheitspolizei (Security Police) and SD (Sicherheitsdienst; Security Service) and dealt first with emigration and later with the deportation of Jews to extermination camps.

Biographical Note
Walter Rischowsky was a functionary in the financial section of the Jewish community in Berlin until his death in 1946. His wife was named Johanna, and they had a daughter, Ilse.

Abstract
The Walter and Johanna Rischowsky Collection primarily contains documents collected by Walter Rischowsky stating rules and restrictions forced upon German Jews between 1941-1942, as well as documents on the emigration and deportation of German Jews. There is also a small amount of biographical information concerning Walter Rischowsky. The documents consist of official regulations from the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland, and copies of memos of the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland concerning meetings between their organization and the Zentralstelle für Jüdische Auswanderung.
