Wedding Portrait of Harris and Lena Singer, 1894
Donald Garber’s grandparents were Lena and Harris Singer who came to the United States in the late nineteenth century. Lena (Cohen) Singer was born in 1872 in Smolensk, Belarus. She married Harris Singer on February 24, 1894. Harris Singer was born in 1874 in Kovno, Lithuania. Harris and Lena had seven children and resided in New York City and Brooklyn. Harris died in 1934 and Lena died in 1945.
Lena had two sisters who also emigrated to the U.S.; Mamie and Rachel Cohen. Mamie was born in 1874 in Smolensk. She married Leopold Schwartz and had four children. Leopold died in 1949 and Mamie died in 1957 in Brooklyn.
Rachel (Cohen) Schaefer was born in 1862 in Smolensk. She married Sholom Schaefer and they had four children. Mamie died in 1916.

This collection consists of twelve items, mainly card photographs of Donald Garber’s grandparents and extended family. They include a wedding invitation in English and Hebrew of Harris and Lena Singer and a business card for Harris Singer. The photographs are wedding portraits and single portraits from the late nineteenth century.
