Kurt Baeck Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection primarily consists of documents related to Kurt Baeck’s emigration first to the Dutch East Indies and then Shanghai, his return to Austria in 1946, and his later immigration to the United States. The materials include identity cards, work permits, travel documents, employment records, baggage tags, health documents, and correspondence with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. The collection also includes financial and business documents, a wedding invitation, telegrams, and an identity card for Lilly Baeck. Kurt Baeck’s scouting (Pfadfinder) records and school report cards from the Allgemeine Volksschule für Knaben and the Hauptschule für Knaben in Vienna are also included.

Biographical Note
Kurt Baeck (1919-1998) was born in Vienna, Austria to Isidor and Hildegard Baeck. He emigrated to the Dutch East Indies in 1939 and was employed by the A. Baeck Company. On January 9, 1941, he emigrated to Shanghai. He returned to Vienna in 1946, where he was subsequently employed by the United States Army. He married Lilly Baeck née Stammer (1920-1994) on March 22, 1947 in Vienna. Kurt and Lilly Baeck immigrated to the United States in 1950, aided by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
