Scope and Content Note

This collection contains material about the Jews of Bamberg, assembled by Herbert Loebl. The bulk consists of Loebl's newsletter "Letter from Bamberg," which chronicles the history and activities regarding Jewish communities in Bamberg and the Franconia region. The collection includes the Letters from 1986 and 1990-2003; it is not a complete set.

The collection also includes two genealogical manuscripts by Loebl about the Rosenfelders of Huettenheim (Marktbreit) / Theilheim (Werneck). Also found in the collection are materials (clippings, scholarly articles) about the history of Jews in Mitwitz, Burgkunstadt, and Bamberg, and materials about commemorative events in Bamberg and other localities in Germany, mostly from the 1980s and 1990s. The collection also includes a photocopy of a letter of protection for Maier Loeb Schloss (1815) and correspondence between Fred Grausmann and German authorities attempting to trace birth records and other family materials pertaining to the Grausmann family.

Biographical Note

Dr. Herbert Loebl OBE (1923, Bamberg, Germany – 2013, Newcastle upon Tyne, England) was prominent industrialist and entrepreneur who founded the scientific manufacturing business Joyce, Loebl & Co in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. His family fled Germany for England in the late 1930s.
