Scope and Content Note

The Ilse Strauss Collection consists of documents pertaining to the family history and life of Ilse Strauss, including genealogical information, correspondence, photographs and writings. Series I contains writings of Ilse Strauss, including a long typescript with detailed accounts of her family history and own biography, and an account of the early experiences of the Strauss family after immigrating to Australia. Also included are shorter similar writings and photocopies of related family documents. Series II contains original documents detailing Ilse Strauss's life in Krefeld and her subsequent emigration from Germany to England and then to Australia, including her personal diary, correspondence and papers related to her emigration.

Ilse Strauss (née Gimnicher) was born on July 12, 1920, in Krefeld, Germany. In 1939, she emigrated from Germany to England, and later to Australia. Her grandparents, parents and brother were murdered in the Holocaust. She married Otto Konrad Strauss (born 1909, Krefeld) and had a son, Dr. Boyd Josef Gimnicher Strauss. She died on October 2, 1983.

Separated Material

Various clippings illustrating Jewish history in Krefeld, Frankfurt am Main, Gelnahusen, Eschwege, Steinhem and Viersen were removed to the LBI Clippings Collection. Also removed were two clippings from Australian publications about the ship Dunera. Photographs were removed to the LBI Photograph Collection.
