Jewish Veterans Association Collection
Scope and Content Note
The Jewish Veterans Association Collection holds this association's organizational records, such as membership lists, a memorial book, financial and tax records, meeting minutes, some clippings and notes.
Information on membership in the Association and on its activities will be found primarily in the first two series of this collection. Series I, which holds the general records of the organization, includes a number of circular letters that announce events. Several folders also include lists of members. Most notable is the Association's memorial book, which lists both deceased members as well as those who still lived upon the dissolution of the organization in 1972, and also lists members of the Ladies Auxiliary. Obituaries for prominent members of the Association are also located in Series I. Series II, which holds notebooks of meeting minutes, includes notes on twenty years of membership meetings. These notes often mention events and activities as well as contain notes on topics of interest to members. Information on the Jewish Veterans Association's annual memorial service will likewise be found in every series; invitations to it are particularly prominent among the circular letters of Series I.
The most prevalent topic of this collection is the information on the Jewish Veterans Association's financial status. Material pertaining to this subject will be found in every series. Series I includes tax records, notes on finances, and receipts for both routine matters and special events, while finances are often mentioned in the meeting minutes of Series II. The yearly reports of the Burial Fund in Series III primarily relate to the Fund's finances.

The Immigrant Jewish War Veterans were formed in 1938 in New York City as a successor organization to the Reichsbund Juedischer Frontsoldaten. By 1950 it had been renamed the Jewish Veterans Association.
The organization stated as its aims and purpose the joining of Jewish war veterans for the memorial of comrades who had died in war or from persecution; the fostering of companionable union; the maintenance and promotion of Jewish cultural values; the defense against anti-Semitism; and social and charitable work. Its members consisted of ordinary, extraordinary and promoting members. Any Jewish war veteran could become an ordinary member, anyone who had been persecuted on behalf of being Jewish could become an extraordinary member and anyone who promoted the organization's aims could become a promoting member. The Association also included a Ladies Auxiliary and a Burial Fund, the latter managed by the Burial Fund Committee.
The Jewish Veterans Association held an annual memorial service and general meeting at Beth Hillel Synagogue in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City.
The Jewish Veterans Association dissolved on December 31, 1972.

Photographs and two photograph albums (for the 20th and 25th anniversaries of the Jewish Veterans Association) have been removed to the LBI Photograph Collection and are viewable online.
Processing Information
During processing of the collection in preparation of the EAD finding aid, the collection was formed into series based on format and subject. Most folders were assigned numbers prior to processing; these have been retained in the folder titles. Some large folders were further subdivided during processing. Folders that were untitled were assigned titles during processing.
