Fleischmann Family Collection
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains materials relating to three brothers: Martin, Justin, and Ernst Fleischmann.
The collection is primarily the educational and professional materials of Ernst Fleischmann. These include diplomas and report cards, letters of recommendation from BMW, a 1930 issue of the BMW airplane engine division's magazine, a doctoral dissertation by Anton Väth dedicated to Fleischmann, clippings, correspondence, and his 1942 patent for a jacketed bullet. Also found here are a German drivers license and the 1934 commendation given to all front-line veterans of World War One.
The Martin Fleischmann folder, in addition to a photocopy of three obituaries, includes a photocopy of a photograph of all three brothers in military uniform.
The Justin Fleischmann folder contains a small handwritten diary kept during his service with the 'List Regiment' (RIR 16), from 1917 to 1918.
The collection also includes a humorously drawn map of Upper Bavaria.

Historical Note
Ernst Fleischmann (1899-1993) earned his initial chemistry degree from the Technical University of Munich in 1924, and subsequently headed the laboratory of the Bavarian Motor Works. He earned an engineering doctorate in 1932. After leaving Germany in 1936, he immigrated to the United States, where he worked as a metallurgist for the Copperweld Steel Company in Glassport, Pennsylvania. While there, he invented and patented a jacketed bullet with improved accuracy.
Martin Fleischmann (1897-1979) left Germany in the 1920s for the United States. He became a metallurgist in Canton, Ohio, specializing in high-strength steel for jet engines that were used by Allied fighters during World War Two.
Justin Fleischmann (1898-1993), as well as his two brothers, served in the German Army during World War One.
