Historical Note

The origins of the metal dealer company Philipp Brothers go back to Hamburg, Germany, 1901. From very small beginnings the company developed over the decades into what is known today as the commodity trader Phibro as well as Derby and Co., Ldt, London, and a score of other companies.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of research materials on the history of Philipp Brothers collected by Helmut Waszkis for his book Philipp Brothers: the rise and fall of a trading giant, 1901-1990.

The collection consists of various documents pertaining to the metal trading company Philipp Brothers such as correspondence, minutes, clippings, annual reports and other financial documents.

The bulk of correspondence included here is with former employees of the Philipp Brothers Firm, individuals who knew the Philipp brothers, and other researchers.

With the exception of some correspondence and some drafts, all the materials in the collection are either copies or printed materials.
