Biographical Note

Born in Hildesheim on February 19, 1835, Moritz Guedemann studied at the Juedisch-theologisches Seminar, Breslau, and became rabbi of Magdeburg in 1862. He became a maggid in Vienna in 1866, and was appointed chief rabbi in 1868. He wrote extensively on Jewish apologetics and education. His early ambivalent attitude to Zionism became strong opposition with his publication of Nationaljudentum in 1897. He died in Baden, near Vienna, on August 5, 1918.
