Abstract: The Larry Racioppo Synagogue Photograph Collection consists of photographs of numerous synagogues primarily within New Jersey and the five boroughs of New York. A majority of the photographs were taken for the Temples calendar which was published for the year 2000 calendar. The images were taken throughout 1999 and depict the synagogues as they stood in 1999.

Biographical Note

Congregation Poile Zedek, New Brunswick, NJ, 1999

Larry Racioppo was born in 1947 and is a professional photographer.1 He began his personal photography in 1970, and had his debut in 1979 with a piece called Halloween.2 His big break, however, didn’t come until 1989, when he became the Staff Photographer for New York City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development.3 With this position, he continued taking on projects, including the Temples project.

Scope and Content Note

The synagogues that are pictured were all built in the Tri-State Area during periods of major Jewish presence. The synagogues were built specifically in New York and New Jersey as grand structures to house the large congregations. The collection holds various depictions of synagogues, as well as enlargements of some that were represented in the calendar. The collection also contains a copy of the final calendar. Box 2 contains 63 photographs.
