Scope and Content Note

This record group contains three-dimensional objects and printed materials that relate to the history of Hadassah, from its creation to the 2010s. A bulk of this record group consists of promotional and commemorative objects and awards created by Hadassah for its Annual and Midwinter National Conventions, and for Young Judaea events. Many of the items were also created as programming materials for the Women’s Health, Education, Public Affairs, and Membership departments. Artifacts created by local Hadassah chapters and regions, and awards received by local and national Hadassah leaders are also included. The items include address books, aprons, art prints, ashtrays, various types of awards, medals, plaques and trophies, badges, cloth and plastic shopping bags, knapsacks, balloons, banners, blank certificates and life membership albums, bookplates, health-related items such as breast examination shower cards, adhesive bandages with holders, pedometers and mini first aid kits, briefcases, bubble blowers, bumper stickers, business cards, buttons, pins and other types of commemorative jewelry, calendars, ceramic jars, challah covers, coasters, commemorative banknotes and coins, coloring books, conventions name tags, jigsaw puzzles, Frisbees, dreidels, dolls and other toys, stationery and paperweights, flags, pennants, samples of printed materials such as booklets, fliers, bookmarks, flashlights, foam core signage, gavels, gift boxes, groggers, handkerchiefs, caps, t-shirts, sweatshirts and other garments, identity cards, jar openers, keychains, Swiss Army knives, lipsticks, luggage tags, refrigerator magnets, maps, matchbooks, megillot, prayer books and mezuzahs, membership cards, metal and ceramic plates, mugs and spoons, placemats, money pouches, purses and wallets, briefcases and portfolios, songbooks and sheet music, water bottles and other items. The record group also contains Henrietta Szold's bronze death mask with a marble display base.

Abstract

This record group contains three-dimensional objects and printed materials that relate to the history of Hadassah. A bulk of this record group consists of promotional and commemorative objects and awards created by Hadassah for its Annual and Midwinter National Conventions, and for Young Judaea events. Examples of such items include t-shirts, hats, bags, buttons, stationery and keychains. Artifacts created by local Hadassah chapters and regions, as well as awards received by local and national Hadassah leaders from other organizations, are also included. Of a particular interest is the bronze death mask of Henrietta Szold.

Processing Information

In December 1999, Hadassah and the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS) entered into an agreement placing the Hadassah Archives on deposit at AJHS for its safekeeping and maintenance. In November 2000, the Hadassah Archives were moved to AJHS under the management of the Director of the Hadassah Archives, Susan Woodland. In 2014, under a new agreement between Hadassah and AJHS, the Hadassah Archives were placed on long-term deposit at AJHS.

This record group was previously partially processed during the 2000s by Susan Woodland and other archivists.

From the mid-2000s until 2016, additional memorabilia and artifacts were donated by chapters, regions and individual members of Hadassah. Approximately 17 linear feet of previously unprocessed accretions were incorporated into this record group.

Previously existing description was reused and incorporated into the 2016 finding aid as much as possible. Most box titles were revised. All boxes were numbered to create uniform numbering across the entire record group.
