Printed Materials and Publications Records in the Hadassah Archives
Scope and Content Note
This record group contains brochures, pamphlets, invitations, cards, certificates, publications, cookbooks, and other printed materials produced by the departments and projects of Hadassah. This printed material serves as quick access to events and programs in Hadassah history. Projects documented include Hadassah Magazine, the Hadassah Medical Organization, Youth Aliyah, the Hadassah Community College, Hadassah Career Counseling Institute, the Jewish National Fund, and Young Judaea. The record group also holds additional materials produced by departments and divisions within the national structure of Hadassah, often designed to distribute to chapters to promote fundraising, membership, Jewish education, and their stances on public policy and women's health.

Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, was founded in 1912 by Henrietta Szold. Hadassah began publishing the Hadassah Bulletin in 1914. It contained regular updates on national projects and Hadassah chapters. The Bulletin was discontinued circa 1920 and the Hadassah Newsletter replaced it with its first issue in March 1920. The aim of the Newsletter was for the Advisory Council to communicate with Hadassah chapters and inform them about Palestine/Israel, help arrange programming, and answer any administrative questions. Over time, the Hadassah Newsletter reported on general Israeli news and Hadassah projects in Israel. In 1961, the newsletter became the Hadassah Magazine and shifted focus to general Jewish women's life topics, such as holidays, travel, food, health, education, culture, Israel, Jewish communities throughout the world, politics, and social issues pertinent to the magazine's readership. In addition to its main publication, Hadassah also produced Hadassah Headlines, which began circa 1933 and was distributed monthly to chapter leadership, with articles on each of the current programs and initiatives in which Hadassah was engaged. In addition to these publications, departments of the national office and projects that Hadassah was involved in also produced newsletters and brochures updating and publicizing their work.
Hadassah also worked closely with Young Judaea. Young Judaea is the oldest Zionist youth organization in the United States, established as a national organization in 1909 by the Federation of American Zionists. It was supported by Hadassah, including direct financial sponsorship from 1967-2011. Young Judaea produced a number of publications, most notably Young Judaean which first began publication in 1910 and was distributed to all Young Judaea members until the 1990s.

Abstract
This record group consists of printed materials and publications, produced by Hadassah projects and departments, Young Judaea, and other Zionist organizations from 1911-2011. Materials in the record group include periodicals, newsletters, greeting cards, certificates, invitations, brochures, pamphlets, catalogs, and other professionally produced printed materials. Besides Young Judaea, projects documented include Hadassah Magazine, the Hadassah Medical Organization, Youth Aliyah, the Jewish National Fund, and Hadassah Israel Education Services.

The Hadassah Archives, of which the Hadassah Printed Materials and Publications Records (RG 17) are a part, are on long-term deposit at the American Jewish Historical Society.
Digitization Note
Copies of Hadassah Bulletin from 1914-1916 and Hadassah Newsletter from 1920-1933 have been digitized.
Microfilm
The Hadassah Archives include a record group comprised of microfilm (RG 19). The run of Hadassah Bulletin, Hadassah Newsletter, and Hadassah Magazine from 1914-2008 can be found in Series III.
Separated Material
One 3.5" floppy disk was imaged and separated from Box 8, Folder 15 to the AJHS audiovisual collection. Images were put on AJHS secure server space.
A duplicate run of Youth Aliyah Letters written by Henrietta Szold was discarded. The run can be found in Boxes 53-54 in RG 1.
Processing Information
In 1997, Series I was processed by J. Silver. In 2014, under a new agreement between Hadassah and AJHS, the Hadassah Archives were placed on long-term deposit at AJHS.
In 2016, the record group was reprocessed to incorporate unprocessed materials, bound volumes, and digitized images. Boxes were consolidated to save space. Container lists from the previous guides and inventories were reused and incorporated into the 2016 finding aid as much as possible. All collection and series level description was written in 2016. Boxes and folder numbers were renumbered to create uniform numbering across the entire record group. Some boxes were replaced and non-archival folders were also replaced. Plastic clips and deteriorating plastic sleeves were removed. Deteriorating bound volumes were removed from bindings and placed in archival housing. In general, folder titles were not rewritten, and reflect the original arrangement and description of the record group. Duplicates were discarded.
