Historical Note

The Society for the Advancement of Judaism was founded in 1922 by Dr. Mordecai M. Kaplan in order to reconcile traditional Judaism with modern life. The Society, which affiliates itself with the Reconstructionist Judaism movement, is not only an organization but also a synagogue, which is located in New York, NY.

The SAJ synagogue held the first ever American Bat Mitzvah on Saturday morning, March 18, 1922 for Mordecai Kaplan's daughter Judith.

Scope and Content Note

Contains materials relating to the various activities of the Society for the Advancement of Judaism, including yearbooks, anniversary albums, the correspondence of Mordecai M. Kaplan, Ira Eisenstein, and Jack J. Cohen, newspaper clippings, and photographs, among others. Materials found in the five scrapbooks (1923-1957) include announcements and programs of events, letters to the Board of Directors, songbooks, newspaper clippings, and materials relating to the career of Mordecai M. Kaplan. Also includes a near-complete run of the SAJ Bulletin for 1928-1970.

Access Restrictions

The collection is open to all researchers by permission of the Director of Library and Archives of the American Jewish Historical Society, except boxes 4-7, which are restricted due to their fragility. These items can only be viewed with special permission of the Director of Library and Archives.

Series III: Scrapbooks, 1923-1957

Scope and Content:

Scrapbooks dated from 1950-1957 contain brochures, announcements, and fliers from the following SAJ groups: Parent-Teacher's Association, Women's Division, and the Youth Division. Also included are informational handouts for the SAJ Hebrew School program and sponsored holiday events.

Scrapbook pages in Boxes 4-7 are housed in OS1 boxes. They are extremely fragile and are restricted due to condition. These items can only be viewed with special permission of the Director of Library and Archives.

Items in this series are a combination of sermons, lectures, and High Holiday ceremonies that took place in 1972. “Kaplan 1972” refers to lectures given by Mordecai Kaplan, the founder of the Society for the Advancement of Judaism.
