Scope and Content Note

The collection consists mainly of family photographs. There are portraits of Lena Bloom, snapshots of Sara Bloom performing modern dance, Aaron and his wife Jennie, Aaron’s passports, coupons for David Blooms dentistry business, and Isadore Bloom’s graduation portrait (from dentistry school). The collection also includes photographs of Aaron’s wife Jennie Edelmuth and her extended family. Jennie became Jean Gale when she married William Gale. The collection includes family photographs of William and Jean, William’s extended family and over 170 photographs of his time in the army during WWII 1944-1945.

Historical Note

Dora and Moses Bloom emigrated from Russia and settled in Manhattan, NY. They had nine children: Frank, Anna, Rosa, Sara, Esther, David, Isadore, Lena and Aaron. Moses Bloom owned a storefront in Harlem. His sons David and Isadore both became dentists and David had a dentistry practice above the store. Their son Aaron Bloom married Jennie Edelmuth in 1932. Jennie and Aaron later divorced and Jennie later remarried William Gale. She then became known as Jean Gale. William Gale served in France during WWII 1944-1945.

Abstract

Jennie Edelmuth married Aaron Bloom in 1932. Aaron was one of nine children of Dora and Moses Bloom. The bulk of this collection contains photographs of Aaron and his siblings Sara, Lena and Isadore and personal items of David and Aaron. Jennie and Aaron later divorced. The collection also encompasses photographs of the Edelmuth family and Jennie’s second husband William Gale and his extended family.
