Biographical Note

Beginning in 1921, rabbi and statistician Harry Sebee Linfield (1889-1978) served as the Director of Information and Statistics of the Bureau of Jewish Social Research, originally a division of the American Jewish Committee, followed by the Synagogue Council of America and the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. He also served as ‘special agent’ for Jewish data for the United States Bureau of the Census in the Decennial Censuses of Religious Bodies in 1926, 1936, and 1946. His Jewish Statistical Bureau conducted other research on Jews in America, and published numerous reports and other publications on their findings, specifically the Statistics of Jews.

Abstract

Harry Sebee Linfield (1889-1978), rabbi and statistician, collected statistics of Jewish life in America for the Bureau of Jewish Social Research and the United States Bureau of the Census. The majority of the collection contains his research data, correspondence, and other personal papers.

Processing Information

In March 2019, AJHS received an accretion to the collection including an introduction to the collection written by Harry S. Linfield's daughter Hadassah, article in Hebrew by Harry S. Linfield entitled "Hosafah la-ma'amar binyan ha-umah", and pamphlet entitled "The census man did not ask your religion... because...". The introduction and Hebrew article were placed in Series I and II respectively, and the folders in Box 1 renumbered accordingly. The pamphlet was placed in Box 4, Folder 23, with similar materials from the Synagogue Council of America's Statistical Bureau.
