Biographical Note

Arthur Ocean Waskow, rabbi, political activist, and teacher was born on October 12, 1933 in Baltimore, Maryland.

He received a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1954 and an M.A. (1956) and PhD. (1963) in US history from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

From 1959 to 1961, he worked as assistant to Robert Katenmeier, a Congressman from Wisconsin.

Together with Richard Barnet and Marcus Raskin, Arthur Waskow helped found the Institute for Policy Studies in 1963. For the next 14 years, he served as Resident Fellow.

From 1963 to the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 Arthur Waskow was a very active opponent to the war.

Beginning in 1963 Arthur Waskow was arrested a number of times for sit-ins and protests against racial discrimination, South African Apartheid, the Vietnam War, among others.

Since 1969, Arthur Waskow has been involved with the Jewish Renewal Movement; movement with the goal of reviving and adapting the old tradition to modern day needs. In the same year he wrote a new version of Haggadah that he used for the first Freedom Seder in 1969.

In 1982, Arthur Waskow founded the Shalom Center, a progressive and liberal organization focusing on ecology reflected through the mirror of Judaism, civil rights movement, interfaith relations, Middle East Peace process, lesbian and gay rights, and the rights of immigrants.

Between 1982 and 1989, Arthur Waskow was a faculty member at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, and taught courses on modern day theology and practical rabbinics. He also taught at other educational institutions, such as Vassar College, Temple University, Swarthmore College, and Drew University.

In 1993 Arthur Waskow co-founded the ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal. Since then ALEPH has become one of the most influential and respected organizations in the Jewish Renewal Movement.

Moreover, Arthur Waskow is a prolific writer, who has written numerous articles and essays as well as larger scale works, most notably Godwrestling (1978), Seasons of Our Joy (1982), Down-to-Earth Judaism: Food, Money, Sex, and the Rest of Life (1995), and Godwrestling — Round 2: Ancient Wisdom, Future Paths (1996).

Scope and Content Note

The Arthur Waskow Papers documents professional activities and to a smaller extent the personal life of Arthur Waskow, Rabbi, activist, and teacher.

The collection includes printed materials such as brochures, booklets, clippings, correspondence, a small number of financial documents, photographs, and writings, belonging to the pen of Arthur Waskow as well as other authors.

Materials comprising the collection reflect various aspects of Arthur Waskow’s personal and professional life, teaching, involvement with the Human and Civil Rights movements, and the Peace Process in the Middle East.

The bulk of the materials consists of correspondence and printed materials which are spread throughout the collection.

Included here is correspondence with Jewish and non-Jewish organizations, spiritual and academic institutions that covers a wide variety of topics, such as interfaith relations, Middle East, Israel and peace movement, Israel and Diaspora, anti-war movement, civil rights, and ecology.

Additionally, there is correspondence regarding Shalom Center and its various projects, and correspondence concerning many conferences and events.

Correspondence with organizations is supplemented by lists, minutes, financial documents and printed materials, such as press releases, newsletters, and educational materials.

One of the most well represented organizations in the collection is the Shalom Center (founded by Arthur Waskow) and ALEPH (co-founded by Arthur Waskow).

Materials pertaining to the Shalom Center and ALEPH include correspondence, printed materials, lists, and some financial documents such as bills and receipts. There are very few additional financial or legal documents that would shed light on the financial and legal aspects of either Shalom Center or ALEPH.

Educational materials consist of curriculum, list of students and classes offered, and printed materials.

There is no membership information and very few documents related to the community and outreach programs conducted by both Shalom Center and ALEPH.

Materials dealing with the Shalom Center and ALEPH cover topics such as educational programs and promoting of Judaism and interfaith relations but are extremely fragmentary.

Printed materials that constitute another large portion of the collection consist of published materials by Arthur Waskow and other authors.

Included here are clippings, articles, magazines, scholarly journals, flyers, brochures and materials pertaining to a number of conferences and gatherings that Arthur Waskow participated in.

There is an abundance of manuscripts, both by Arthur Waskow and other authors that deal primarily with topics such as Jewish Revival, Jewish education, Jewish self-awareness, spirituality, and Torah.

Most of the manuscripts are complete drafts without corrections or annotation, and are not much different from the published versions.

Whereas Waskow’s manuscripts are drafts of his large scale works the works of other authors are predominantly short articles and essays collected by Arthur Waskow for publications run by the Shalom Center/ALEPH.

Surprisingly, a number of Arthur Waskow’s major works, such as Down-to-Earth Judaism: Food, Money, Sex, the Rest of Life and Godwrestling are missing altogether.

In addition to the manuscripts of Waskow’s published works, there is a small amount of unpublished manuscripts.

Arthur Waskow’s involvement with liberal Judaism is well documented by materials pertaining to the publication and use of Waskow’s The Freedom Seder:A New Haggadah for Passover, including several drafts of the Haggadah text, materials relating to "Freedom Seders" held in 1969 and 1970 in which Waskow participated, correspondence expressing reactions to the work, book reviews and news clippings, correspondence regarding promotion of the published Haggadah, and orders for the Haggadah.

Additionally there are materials dealing with the 40th Anniversary of the Freedom Seder.

Other materials in the collection include a small amount of personal materials, mostly correspondence with family members, materials dealing with Arthur Waskow’s resistance to paying taxes, court documents, photographs and materials pertaining to Arthur Waskow’s education.

Scope and Content:

Series VI: Shalom Center/ALEPH includes materials related to the Shalom Center, founded by Arthur Waskow in 1983 and ALEPH, founded by Arthur Waskow in 1993. Educational materials consist of curriculum, list of students and classes offered, and printed materials.

There is no membership information and very few documents related to the community and outreach programs conducted either by Shalom Center or ALEPH.

Series VIII: Writings, 1948, 1980-2007.

This section is in English.
3.5 linier feet.
Arrangement:

Alphabetical

Scope and Content:

Series VIII: Writings includes manuscripts by Arthur Waskow as well as other authors that deal with topics such as Jewish Revival, Jewish education, Jewish self-awareness, spirituality, and Torah.

Most of the manuscripts, both by Waskow and by others, are complete drafts lacking corrections and annotation, thus not different much (if at all} from the published versions.

Whereas Waskow’s manuscripts are drafts of his large scale works, the works of other authors are predominantly short articles and essays collected by Arthur Waskow for publications in various publications run by the Shalom Center/ALEPH.

Surprisingly, a number of Arthur Waskow’s major works, such as Down-to-Earth Judaism: Food, Money, Sex, and the Rest of Life and Godwrestling are missing altogether.
