Scope and Content Note

This collection contains black and white and color photographs dating from 1900 through 1995; original and facsimile marriage, birth, and death certificates for members of the Simpson-Bernstein and Rubin-Simpson families. It also contains a key by Laura Rubin, with the photographs individually numbered, titled, and dated. Some of the photographs are inscribed.

Historical Note

The Laura Rubin Family papers span four generations of the Bernstein, Rubin, and Simpson families. This collection is comprised primarily of family photographs and certificates of marriage, birth, and death for the Rubin-Simpson family of Brooklyn, New York and the Simpson-Bernstein family of Schenectady, New York. A portion of this collection relates to Laura Rubin, who is an American photographer born in 1948 and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Rubin is known for her photographs documenting New York’s downtown scene during the late 1960s and early 1970s, including members of Andy Warhol’s factory. Represented in the collection are Laura Rubin’s maternal grandparents: Morris and Charlotte Simpson and parents: Philip and Ellen Rubin, amongst other family members.
