Scope and Contents

The materials in this collection document the Jewish communities in Westphalia and in particular the town of Hoexter. It contains a manuscript written by Alex Bernstein called Die Juden im Kreise Hoexter (Westf.) und benachbarten Bezirken - In den letzten circa 200 Jahren, which includes a list of Jews in Hoexter as well as a map of Hoexter county. Folders 4-15 contain handwritten notebooks with information regarding cemeteries in various communities and lists of names, marriages, births, and deaths. A 23 page history of the Eichengruen family written by Gustav Eichengruen is included, called Die Eichen(l)gruens zugleich ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der westfaelischen Juden.

Biographical Note

Alex Bernstein was born in 1862 in Hoexter. He became an American citizen and lived in Chicago. He died in 1941 in San Diego.
