Ludwig Marum Collection
Scope and Content Note
The Ludwig Marum collection documents Ludwig Marum’s involvement with politics and Elisabeth Lunau’s genealogical research about the Marum family.
The bulk of the materials pertaining to Ludwig Marum consists almost entirely of printed materials and includes copies of the socialist newspaper Volksfreund, where Ludwig Marum published a large number of his articles. Other materials dealing with Ludwig Marum include court procedures from the trial of the individuals accused of the murder of Ludwig Marum.
Genealogy materials include documents collected by Elisabeth Lunau for her research on the family history and consists of correspondence, vital documents, such as birth and death certificates, marriage certificates, manuscripts, notes, some printed materials, and genealogical tables.
This collection consists almost entirely of photocopies with addition of a very few letters, genealogical tables, and fragmentary notes.

Biographical Note
Born in Frankenthal, in the Palatinate, on November 5, 1885, Ludwig Marum studied law at Heidelberg and Munich and practiced in Karlsruhe. A member of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD), he represented his party in the Landtag of Baden from 1914 to 1928. From 1918 to 1919 he served as Minister of Justice. Marum was a member of the Reichstag from 1928 until 1933. On May 16, 1933 he was arrested and deported to Kislau concentration camp, where he was murdered on March 29, 1934.
