Historical Note

27th Annual Anniversary Luncheon Program, 1990

The United Order of True Sisters was initially established at Temple Emanu-El in New York City, and claims to be the “first independent national women’s organization in the United States.” Although a charitable organization, the UOTS also had political goals. Originally titled “Unabhangiger Order Trueue Schwestern,” the organization was made up of mostly middle-class, German Jewish women. Meetings were conducted in German until the end of the First World War.

In 1947, UOTS founded the United Order of True Sisters, Inc. National Cancer Service, which was renamed the United Order of True Sisters Cancer Services in 1956. The UOTS Heritage #53 was a chapter of this organization, and their main goal was to raise funds to support oncology centers, including purchasing medical equipment, laptops, and books for hospitals in Massachusetts.
