Rabbi Leon Kronish served as spiritual leader of Temple Beth Sholom, a Reform synagogue located in Miami Beach, Florida, from 1944 through his semi-retirement in 1984. He continued to serve the Temple in a diminished capacity until 1995. Leon Kronish was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 21, 1917. He was the son of Max and Lena (Seligman) Kronish, Orthodox Jews who immigrated to the United States in 1910 from Eastern Europe. (Sources list either Poland or Ukraine, though the 1940 US Census lists Poland. As Poland didn't regain independence until 1918, it is likely that the Kronish family emigrated from either Congress Poland or Galicia.)1 According to the 1940 United States Census, Max and Lena Kronish also had two other children, Sylvia and Walter.2

Leon Kronish graduated from Eastern District High School in Brooklyn in 1932 and then attended Brooklyn College from which he graduated in 1936.3 Between 1937 and 1938, Kronish met two influential people that would shape his life and religious ideology, Rabbi Mordecai M. Kaplan (Reconstructionist) and Rabbi Stephen S. Wise (Reform).4 In 1938, Kronish entered the Jewish Institute of Religion (later Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion) located in New York City. He was ordained by Rabbi Wise at the Jewish Institute of Religion in 1942. In 1967, Kronish was awarded a Doctor of Divinity from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

According to Henry A. Green, Professor of Religion at the University of Miami, Kronish inherited from Rabbi Wise (while at the Jewish Institute of Religion) "a strong commitment to the Reform mainspring of the prophetic mission of social justice," "a fervent activist-oriented Zionism," and "an ecumenical approach, certainly to Christians, but even more so to those of Klal Yisrael (Jewish Peoplehood) who were Conservative or Orthodox."5 From Rabbi Kaplan, Kronish was impacted by his "insistence on the centrality of a living liturgy, one that could express and re-express the simultaneous commitment of a living people to both change and continuity as part of a dynamic process of identity."6 Kronish was also influenced by the Cultural Zionism of Alexander Dushkin. As a result, Kronish "came to have a multi-faceted conception of what it meant to be Zionist, one simultaneously collective (Klal Yisrael), egalitarian (social justice and Labor Zionism), and cultural (intimately connected to Hebrew as a living language)."7Green also argues that Kronish can be understood within four institutional contexts that shaped him and that he, in turn, influenced: Liberal Judaism, Zionism, Miami Beach (South Florida was a hotbed for the civil rights/desegregation movement, the debate over separation of church and state/prayer in public schools, and the nuclear disarmament and peace movement in the 1950s and 1960s), and Temple Beth Sholom.8

In 1944, Kronish was elected spiritual leader of Beth Sholom Center, then a small storefront Conservative synagogue that was established in Miami Beach in 1942. In 1945, under Rabbi Kronish's leadership, the synagogue shifted from Conservative to Reform Judaism and the name was changed to Temple Beth Sholom. Between the mid-1940s and 1967, the congregation grew from 40 households to over 1200 congregant households.9 As a result of this growth in membership, the Temple built a new sanctuary which opened in 1957 (the first of several infrastructure projects over the years).

During Rabbi Kronish's tenure, Temple Beth Sholom established programs and activities common to Reform synagogues including the founding of local chapters of the Sisterhood and Men's Club and implementing educational programs such as Hebrew school and religious classes for children, teens, and adults. Rabbi Kronish taught adult education classes such as "The Great Jewish Books," "Contemporary Jewish Thought," and "300 Years of American Jewry."10 The Temple also offered a lecture series on current events and weekly library readings. Writer Isaac Bashevis Singer was a periodic guest. In the mid-1970s, the Temple's education arm was renamed the Rabbi Leon Kronish School of Living Judaism in honor of his leadership.11

Cultural programming was also a focus for the Temple. An art gallery was founded and, in the 1960s, the Culture and Fine Arts Series was established (led by the efforts of Temple staff member and congregant Judy Drucker). In 1970, it was renamed the Great Artist Series and renowned musicians, singers, and dancers from all over the world performed in it including Mstislav Rostropovich, Itzhak Perlman, and Pinchas Zuckerman.

Self-described as the "the Liberal congregation on the beach" (the byline on their newsletter from the 1940s through the 1990s), the Temple was active in social justice, civil rights, and environmental issues in the last half of the 20th century and their programming and community outreach activities reflected this. Building bridges and bonds between the Jewish Diaspora and Israel was a key focus for Rabbi Kronish and subsequently he established the Israeli-in-Residence program at the Temple, as well as organized pilgrimages to Israel for youth and adults.

Beyond his service at Temple Beth Sholom, Rabbi Kronish was actively involved in numerous professional and Jewish organizations. For the State of Israel Bonds Organization, a fundraising organization that raises money to support infrastructure projects and other programs in Israel, Kronish served as Assistant Chairman for Israel Bonds, National Chairman of Israel Bonds Rabbinic Cabinet, and National Co-Chairman of the Israel Bonds Campaign. His activities with Israel Bonds enabled him to travel extensively in the United States and Israel. Through Israel Bonds, Kronish met many Israeli and American dignitaries including David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, and Yitzhak Rabin.

For his alma mater, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Kronish served as the President of the Alumni Association and was on the Board of Governors. Other national activities included serving as the National Senior Vice-President of the American Jewish Congress and as the National Chairman of Board of the American Israel Histadrut Foundation. Locally, he served as President of the Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami and as President of the American Jewish Congress Southeast Council. For the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Kronish was on the Executive Committee. He also served as Associate Chairman of the Combined Jewish Appeal-Israel Emergency Fund.

In 1940, Kronish married Lillian Austin, also of Brooklyn. Lillian Kronish (1917-2009) was very active in Temple Beth Sholom activities including the synagogue's Sisterhood chapter. The Kronishes had three children; Jordan, who died at age 17 in 1960, Ronald (1946-), who is a rabbi and is the founder and director of the Interreligious Coordinating Council in Israel, and Maxine Snyder (1951-2004), who served in various capacities in Hillel and in Jewish educational organizations before her untimely death. Leon and Lillian Kronish had five grandchildren. In 1978 and 1984, Rabbi Kronish suffered two major illnesses that ultimately affected his long-term health (a heart attack and a stroke, respectively). He died on May 23, 1996 following an illness.

Subseries 2: Correspondence, undated, 1946-1995

Boxes 2-6. (2.1 linear feet).
Arrangement:

Chronological.

Scope and Content:

This subseries comprises the correspondence files that were accumulated and maintained by Leon Kronish. Personal and professional correspondence is intermingled within folders. Included is correspondence documenting Kronish's activities within professional organizations, correspondence pertaining to his role as spiritual leader (rabbi) at Temple Beth Sholom, and personal correspondence written to and from family and friends. Kronish often made copies of his own letters and these are intermingled within the subseries as well. Also included are related documents and material that are referenced in some of the letters.

Though the subseries contains correspondence from notable individuals such as Israeli Prime Ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Menachem Begin, and Golda Meir, Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek, and Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, the majority of the correspondence is from friends, family, and colleagues. The subseries contains both typed and handwritten letters and memorandums, cards, clippings, articles, publications, and pamphlets.

The subseries also contains get well cards and letters Kronish received from congregants, colleagues, friends, and family, dating from 1978, 1984, and the 1990s, during his recovery from several major illnesses. The get well cards and letters were kept by Kronish in three-ring binders and were primarily glued to pages within the binders. Kronish received cards and letters from Temple Beth Sholom congregants and other "local" people from Miami Beach, as well as from people across the United States, and from Canada and Israel. Included are a card from former President Gerald Ford and an original color pen-and-ink drawing by Irving Shapiro.

Also of interest is mailgrams sent by Kronish in 1978 after his heart attack. The mailgrams were sent to government officials and reporters in the United States and in Israel. Included is a mailgram declining an invitation to attend the reception and religious convocation commemorating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the State of Israel that was held at the White House in 1978.

A small amount of correspondence can also be found in Subseries 5: Subject Files, located in Series I. A large amount of memorandums are included in Series II: Temple Beth Sholom Records, Subseries 2: Memorandums.

Subseries 3: Sermons, Sermon ideas, and Writings, undated, 1945-1983

Boxes 6-12. (3.15 linear feet).
Arrangement:

Chronological.

Scope and Content:

This subseries contains nearly a complete history of the sermons written by Leon Kronish, spanning nearly 40 years. His sermons, sermon ideas, and writing reflect the tenets of Reform Judaism, as well other concerns and influences such as social justice, Zionism, an ecumenical approach to religion, and building community and bonds between Israel and the Jewish Diaspora. Subjects of his sermons reflect some of the most pressing and controversial issues of the time. These include prejudice (Ida Jiggets, 1958); birth control and the Draper Committee ("What does Liberal Judaism teach us about birth control," 1960); Dr. Martin Luther King and civil disobedience ("Passive Resistance," 1961); Vietnam ("Are men of conscience being jailed?," 1973); the United Nations' vote to recognize the Palestinian Liberation Organization ("Is there any hope for the UN?," 1974); corporal punishment of children ("Sometimes even the Supreme Court makes no sense!," 1977); and the trial of Treblinka executioner Feodor Fedorenko ("Will Justice Prevail?", 1978).

The majority of the sermons are typed, but handwritten outlines, notes, and edits are also included. His sermon ideas take the form or typed and handwritten notes, as well as clippings and articles from newspapers and magazines.

Audio recordings of Kronish giving his sermons can be found in Series II: Temple Beth Sholom Records, Subseries 10: Sound Recordings of Services.

Subseries 6: Photographs, 1940-1995

Box 52 (PHOTOS). (.25 linear feet.)
Arrangement:

Alphabetical by subject.

Scope and Content:

The majority of the photographs in this subseries show Leon Kronish, either as the main subject or in the periphery. Most of the photographs relate to either Kronish's activities with Israel Bonds or his work serving as spiritual leader at Temple Beth Sholom. Through Israel Bonds, Kronish met numerous Israeli officials, American entertainers, and other well-known people and the photographs document these encounters. Some of the people shown in the photographs include Yitzhak Rabin, Golda Meir, David Ben-Gurion, Teddy Kollek, Ephraim Katzir, Rafael Eitan, Eleanor Roosevelt, Abe Vigoda, and Hal Linden. There is also one folder of photographs that show other members of the Kronish family, including Lillian, Ronald, and Maxine Kronish. One of the earliest photographs dates from 1940 and shows Leon and Lillian Kronish on their wedding day. The most recent photographs in the subseries are color snapshots taken from celebrations and activities held in honor of Rabbi Kronish's 50 years of service at Temple Beth Sholom. The photographs visually chronicle Leon Kronish as he aged from a young man of about 23 years old to an elderly man well into his 80s. The photographs have been moved to the AJHS Photographs Collection.

Series II: Temple Beth Sholom Records, 1944-1996

Primarily in English, with some material in Hebrew.
Boxes 27-52, Box 72 (AJHS Audiovisual Collection). (13.5 linear feet).
Arrangement:

This series is arranged into ten subseries.

Scope and Content:

Series II consists of material accumulated by Leon Kronish while he served as spiritual leader at Temple Beth Sholom. Though he served as rabbi at the Temple, his work also included administrative duties, fundraising and financial planning, program planning, educational planning, and teaching adult education and religious classes at the Temple. The Temple Beth Sholom records encompass Kronish's work and activities at the Temple, spanning forty years, including worship services, lifecycle events (bar/bat mitzvahs, confirmation, weddings, counseling, etc.), and administrative, fundraising, and planning duties. The records also provide a comprehensive view of Temple administration, planning, and programming from its founding years in the early 1940s through the 1980s. The records document intermittent periods of expansion, stabilization, and decline of Temple membership, shadowing concurrent periods of influx, stabilization, and decline of Jews migrating to the Miami Beach area in the late-1940s through the 1980s. Subseries 3: Anniversaries and Ceremonies and Subseries 9: Photographs highlight significant events for both the Temple and for Rabbi Kronish.

Included are staff memorandums, newsletters, photographs, financial records, administrative records, worship service programs, educational planning material and curricula, printed matter, sound recordings, marriage records, and various material documenting bar/bat mitzvahs and confirmation (scripts and hymns, lists of participants, pamphlets, programs, correspondence, memorandums, notes, clippings, and receipts).

Subseries 1: Administrative and Financial, undated, 1953-1986

Boxes 27-30. (2 linear feet.)
Arrangement:

Alphabetical by subject. One folder of miscellaneous material is located at the end of the subseries.

Scope and Content:

This subseries contains files kept by Leon Kronish pertaining to the general administration, financial administration, and fundraising efforts of Temple Beth Sholom executive and general staff during the years he served as rabbi there. The subseries documents major financial and administrative undertakings of the Temple from the 1950s through the 1980s. These undertakings include several fundraising campaigns for the building of a new sanctuary and for the renovation of existing building infrastructure. The subseries also documents financial and future planning efforts at the Temple, as well as the implementation and/or running of Temple programs such as the Israeli-in-Residence Program and the Great Artists Series. Included in the subseries are financial documents, memorandums and correspondence, reports, clippings, minutes, various lists (membership, executive staff, choir, etc.), and various printed matter.

Subseries 5: Lifecycle Events, 1945-1987

Boxes 38-43. (2.85 linear feet).
Arrangement:

Alphabetical by subject.

Scope and Content:

This subseries documents over forty years of lifecycle events, activities, and ceremonies that took place at Temple Beth Sholom under Rabbi Kronish's leadership. The bar/bat mitzvah material includes names of participants and ceremony material. It can also include correspondence, memorandums, and other related material.

Confirmation material includes class material, confirmation scripts and hymns, schedules, pamphlets and publications, names of confirmants, confirmation service programs, notes, clippings, memorandums, and receipts. As planning for confirmation service started in the previous year of the actual confirmation (held on Shavuot, generally late May or early June), material in folders can date from the previous fall and winter. In 1984, Rabbi Kronish suffered a stroke and Rabbi Harry Jolt took over confirmation service for that year.

Marriage records include name, residence, age, marital status (single, widowed, or divorced), occupation, birthplace, father's name, mother's maiden name, number of previous marriages, date of marriage, and names of witnesses. An earlier version of the form (see Box 42, Folder 11) also includes synagogue affiliation, religious school attended, year of Bar Mitzvah and Confirmation and the synagogue they took place in, year converted to Judaism and who performed the conversion, organizations of affiliation, schools and colleges attended, most recent medical examination, and books on marriage recently read. The earlier marriage records document the migration of Jews from the Northeast United States to the South during the 1940s through the 1960s. Many of documented in the marriage records were either born in or previously lived in the Northeast, particularly from the New York City metro area.

Boxes 43-47. (2.15 linear feet).
Arrangement:

Alphabetical by subject.

Scope and Content:

The subseries contains material that reflects Temple Beth Sholom's mission to promote and provide lifelong learning to all of its members, and represents nearly forty years of educational curriculum and programming at the Temple. The Temple offered educational curriculum for all age levels, from nursery school through adult education. They offered Hebrew school, religious school, a lecture series, and Bible and Torah study. Rabbi Kronish taught many adult education classes including "The Great Jewish Books," "Contemporary Jewish Thought," and "300 Years of American Jewry." Examples of this can be found in the folders titled "Adult Education." The School for Living Judaism material comprises the majority of the subseries and contains correspondence, memorandums, school year calendars and schedules, and various printed matter. Bible and Torah study material consists of lists of readings and related discussion topics.

Subseries 8: Newsletters and Printed Matter, 1944-1996

Boxes 49-51. (1.5 linear feet).
Arrangement:

Alphabetical by subject.

Scope and Content:

The Temple Beth Sholom Bulletin was originally called Beth Sholom Center News and was subsequently renamed Temple Beth Sholom Weekly Bulletin (1945-1947), Temple Beth Sholom Bulletin (1947-1990s), and finally Hakol (1990s and current name as of 2014). All iterations of the newsletter are represented in this subseries. The newsletter includes sermon titles for weekly Shabbat services, musical programming information, general Temple updates, a list of new members, and information about Temple groups, programs, and activities. The newsletter also lists the names of the rabbi, auxiliary rabbi, cantor, executive secretary, officers, board of directors, and general staff. Generally, the newsletter was printed either weekly or biweekly. The Bulletin documents the wide variety of activities and events that took place at the Temple, as well as events that were sponsored by the Temple but held elsewhere. The Temple attracted local, national, and international guests, speakers, artists, musicians, religious thinkers, intellectuals, and politicians and this is documented in the newsletters.

The subseries includes the first newsletter printed following Rabbi Kronish's election as spiritual leader of Temple Beth Sholom in 1944 (Box 49, Folder 1). The subseries does not include Bulletins from October 1952 through September 1970. After 1986, there are only three issues of the newsletter in the subseries (1988, 1995, and 1996).

Arrangement:

Alphabetical by subject.

Scope and Content:

The photographs in this subseries chiefly capture the construction of the new Temple Beth Sholom sanctuary that took place from 1954 to 1955.
