Scope and Content Note

43 original, handwritten letters in Judeo-German, written by Anselm Marum mostly in Sobernheim to Sara Marcus in Kreuznach and in Hüffelsheim during their long courtship, 1828 to 1842. They show her hesitancy and his ardor, but there are also frequent excuses, why he could not come to see her.

There are also some letters from Caroline Wolff.

Also available are some selected transcriptions and English translations.

Biographical Note

Anselm Marum was born Oct. 20, 1805 in Waldböckelheim an der Nahe. He was a travelling salesman for the firm of A. Wolff Jr., owned by Caroline Wolff, the sister of Sara Marcus, who was born June 16, 1816 in Hüffelsheim an der Nahe. After a long courtship Anselm and Sara (“Särchen”) got married on Aug. 28, 1842. The couple had nine children, seven boys and two girls. Eventually, Sara took over the firm from her sister Caroline. When Anselm died on June 12, 1865 in Sobernheim, Sara renamed the company “A. (Anselm) Marum Wwe, Sobernheim” and started to manufacture hosiery. Sara Marum died on Dec. 11, 1902 in Sobernheim.
